With their exceedingly knowlegable staff of experts and amazing selection of fine instruments from a wide variety of makers, Gryphon Strings continues to offer a meaningful experience to the residents of the South Bay and beyond. They opened a store front in 1973 and by the late ‘70s had established themselves as a premium purveyor of high-quality instruments, reliable instrument repair and music education. Richard and co-owner Frank Ford started Gryphon Stringed Instruments in 1969 primarily as maker of fine guitars, mandolins and banjos. ![]() Regarded as an expert in the field of acoustic instruments, Richard has been invited to join the staff of musical instrument appraisers on the PBS series “Antiques Roadshow.” ![]() Johnson has written many published articles and books on fine and vintage instruments, the history therein and the guitar experience at large. A solid word-of-mouth reputation is the highest form of recognition, which is why we were thrilled when Richard Johnson – co-owner of Gryphon Stringed Instruments-began doing business with us in 2007 on the recommendation of one of our key dealers in the Pacific Northwest.
